Q: What is the background of your Christian counsellors?
Each team member at Bridges is a committed Christian and has a personal relationship with Jesus. Many of the team have actively served in pastoral and leadership roles within churches. Some have served in missionary roles, and some have theological training. Our team profile pages explain further details about Christian background.
Q: How is Christian counselling different from pastoral counselling?
Christian counselling requires formal training in psychology and counselling, and is regulated by professional associations. In contrast, pastoral counsellors, often clergy, offer pastoral counselling without needing professional counselling qualifications. Each professional role complements the other, with Christian counselling focusing on psychological care and pastoral counselling offering spiritual and holistic support.
Q. What is the difference between Christian counselling, faith-based counselling, faith-informed counselling and biblical counselling?
Christian counselling integrates psychological principles with Christian values and worldview. It is provided by professionally trained therapists who also hold Christian beliefs. The counselling follows evidence-based psychological methods but may incorporate prayer or Christian values if helpful for reaching therapy goals and only if requested by the client.
Faith-based counselling, faith-informed counselling are much broader terms. We implement these approaches insofar that we respect the client’s faith values and integrate them into therapy when relevant.
Biblical counselling is usually offered by trained pastors and ministry leaders where the overriding focus is biblical teaching rather than evidence-based psychological methods. This is not what we offer. We encourage clients who seek this to rely on their pastors or ministry leaders.
Q: We are not religious or spiritual. Will you promote Christian views?
Our primary goal is to offer professional therapy tailored to your unique needs and goals. We respect your beliefs, culture, and background, and our therapists will never push religious agendas against your wishes. Our team is committed to offering unbiased, respectful and ethical care. We prioritise creating a safe, warm, and professional space that supports your healing journey.
Q: Our particular faith tradition or beliefs are very important to us. How can we find out if you can help?
Contact us for a free 15-minute phone consultation. All our team members are committed Christians from various Christian denominations. We’ll work with you to match you with a therapist who aligns with your faith tradition or makes you feel comfortable that they are on the same page. We work independently and are not supported by any particular church or denomination.
Q. For a Christian client, like me, how is a Christian therapist a better fit than a secular therapist?
Christianity, if true, is mind-blowingly positive in how it views the purpose of life and the character of God eg he enters our ‘world’, he ‘gets us’, and he has unfathomable tenderness and grace towards humanity. We believe all that. Our prayer is that this hope-filled worldview gives us attunement, groundedness and positive presence with Christian clients, even if faith issues aren’t expressly discussed.
Q: How can I, as a Christian leader, refer people to your services?
Simply contact us for a free 15-minute phone consultation. We’ll explain our approach, discuss our services, and explore how we can support the well-being of your church members or ministry team.
Q: What services do you provide to Christian leaders?
We offer counselling, accountability and ministry supervision from a psychological wellbeing and self-care perspective. This is especially helpful during transitions or leadership challenges, helping ministry leaders to achieve emotional health and recovery.
Q: How do you support missionaries and Christian leaders in high-pressure ministries?
We recognise the unique challenges of missionary and ministry life, including burnout and emotional strain. Our services include debriefing, support, and counselling specifically for those in high-pressure ministries. We partner with mission agencies, Bible colleges, and churches to offer services that align with your ministry’s vision.
Q: What services do you provide to Christian schools?
Christian schools refer students and families seeking support for academic, educational and ADHD assessments, or for mental health challenges. We provide counselling services to help students navigate personal, social, and academic issues, ensuring emotional well-being and academic success.
Q: How do you counsel Christian couples?
We approach Christian couples counselling grounded in the belief that God created each person in His image with inherent dignity and designed marriage as a lifelong, intimate partnership. We help couples address personal heart issues, encourage humility and self-reflection, and support deeper connection and understanding between partners to strengthen their relationship.
