Sylvia Belsey
Who Am I?
My name is Sylvia Belsey and I have been a practicing Counsellor for over 15 years.
My qualifications are:
- Graduate Diploma in Gestalt Therapy
- Masters of Counselling
- Bachelor of Social Science
- Certificate of Addictions Counselling
I have also undertaken professional training in Conflict Resolution, Child Sexual Assault (Child Protection) - Core Training and Interagency Response, Domestic Violence, Empowerment Therapy, Art and Play Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Narrative Therapy and I am a qualified First Aid Officer.
I began as a Drug and Alcohol counsellor and through my 15 years of counselling experience, I have been presented with a variety of complex issues from clients. My journey in counselling has been a very interesting and exciting one. Many work pathways have opened up for me and I am happy to say that I have worked in a variety of organisations such as women's refuges, community centres, rehabilitation centres, the Hawkesbury District Health Service in Windsor NSW, the Royal Australian Air Force in Richmond NSW and recently Blacktown Alcohol and Other Drugs Family Services. I have also been operating my own private counselling business for over 5 years.
Philosophy
My working philosophy is to help create stronger, functioning, cohesive societies, communities and families.
Mission Statement
To assist individuals, families, communities and workers to: grow in empowerment; strengthen their skills and resilience; reduce stress; take responsibility for their own lives and actions; and manage addictive/harmful behaviours.
What is being offered?
There are two separate aspects of the counselling I am offering:
Supervision for staff in work related areas
Staff supervision is the professional support that is provided by a qualified counsellor with the purpose of assisting staff in reducing their stress and enhancing staff's quality of professional services provided to clients. The individual and group supervision will incorporate debriefing, education and consultancy. Supervision is not meant to be an advisory or management role.
Staff supervision is offered on the proviso that all staff are professionals in their own right and therefore have the level of training and competence that is required for the position in which they are employed thus minimising any risk of harm to clients and themselves.
The initial session will involve getting to know the staff and drafting staff requirements for supervision and what will be provided. An understanding of staff work related needs and whether their needs can be met by myself will be discussed.
Individual staff supervision is another option if there is only one staff member or if it is the preferred option of the organisation.
Individual and family counselling
There may be times when we may need the support of a counsellor to help us through difficult phases in our lives.
I provide individual and family counselling for the following issues:
- Divorce/separation
- Grief and loss
- Relationship
- Work place grievances
- Family of origin/childhood
- Domestic violence
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Anger
- Stress
- Conflict
- Spirituality
- Guilt/shame
- Sexual abuse
- General
- Drug/alcohol/gambling addictions
Confidentiality
Information discussed in supervision and counselling sessions and any case material will remain confidential.
Exceptions to the above general practice occur when: counsellor or client files are subpoenaed to court; if information disclosed, that by law, must be notified; if there is risk of harm to children, self or other parties; aspects of the sessions may be discussed with supervisors, while respecting confidentiality. Taking particular cases to supervisors is a general ethical practice of counsellors and this is done so as to provide clients with the best possible service. |
